Montana

I don't know where this path will take me and I don't know what I'm looking for. People ask me all the time, "why did you come here?"
"The skiing sucks back home," I reply. That is accurate, I am here for the skiing. The mountains are my playground, but something else draws me to the northwest. It feels close to the edge, and thats the best way I can describe it. I'm just looking for my own path.

Pressure

Pressure can often compel our actions and dictate our direction in life. The word implies a deficiency of time and a surplus of consequence. Pressure distorts the empirical facts of any situation; it gives us tunnel vision. Pressure kills creativity and we become overwhelmed by potential consequences. It can take many forms but the way we manage pressure dictates the outcome of any situation. Like I said before, preparation helps manage uncertainty and thus helps to manage pressure. But uncertainty is a prerequisite of pressure, and if life has taught be anything its that certainty is an illusion. So, next time you feel pressure creeping up on you, embrace it. Let it keep your awareness sharp. Trust your line and hold fast.

Orea got off her line and had to improve the whole thing but still stomped it and ended up qualifying 4th. Fuck yeah.

 Things don't always work out.

The event coordinator granted me permission to traverse onto the course where I hunkered down under some trees and was fortunate enough to get some great shots of the action.

The finish from my perch high above.

Unfortunately I came down to the finish area right before my buddy Trace dropped. I was fast enough to get my camera out and get two shots of his three off a lower rock and coming into the finish. Sorry bud. Thank you to all the athletes who got out there and sent it big all weekend and thank you to Ron who gave me permission to go on course. My mind/brain has expanded.

British Columbia 2014

Uncertainty is a reoccurring theme, if not a key ingredient, to life on the road. Being outside of one's amenity leads to a sharp awareness and blocks out complacency. Preparation in the form of information and equipment cannot be neglected and allows one to mitigate risk and increase chances for reward. But practical preparation can never completely rid one of the uncertainty of a journey to a new place. Nor should it.

Aloha

On the Coconut Wireless good news travels quickly across the island. Bad news travels quicker. When I got the news, we were standing on Kahili Ridge. From there you can watch the island stretch out East to Wailua and South to Kalaheo. The ridge is home to many native species of plants that are not easy to find anymore. Maybe ironic isn't the right word, but I can't pick another to describe it. The last time we spoke, I had just come back from Kahili Ridge, and you had told me how special that hike was. Though nobody was ready to hear the news of your passing, I'm glad I was there when I received it. I didn't spend nearly as much time with you as I would have liked, but in the short time that I knew you I cannot remember an instance in which you showed anything but the raw spirit of Aloha. You embodied that philosophy Corey. You spread the joy and Aloha everywhere you went and to everyone you met. I miss you brother, and countless others feel the same way. Keep an eye out for us and I'll see you soon.

We all know what you would like to see us do with this news; celebrate your life and celebrate all life. We will try to carry the torch that you effortlessly held. Thank you for everything Corey Clifford. Aloha
